The Gifts of the Holy Spirit which Serve to Contemplation

The gifts of the Holy Spirit which serve to contemplation are particularly those of understanding, wisdom, and science [knowledge], in regard to the intellect; and those of piety and fear, in regard to the will.

By the gift of science we have knowledge of creatures, and despise them, beholding their frailness, their fleetingness, their nothingness. By the gift of wisdom we know the greatness of God and of heavenly things; and hence we are led to detach ourselves from all affection to creatures, in order to unite ourselves solely to God…
Louis Lallemant SJ (1578–1635)
