I admit that we are outwardly virtuous. But how many things we lack, and what need we have to banish all negligence in order to acquire the virtues necessary to attain to contemplation.

      I’ve lost the reference, but I think Saint Teresa is explaining (in Interior Castle) how many of us are outwardly pious but need to apply ourselves to interior work and interior control, weeding out the deeper, interior, subtle sins, before God gives contemplation (somewhere around the IV mansions).
