To Be Rich and Live in Comfort

Blessed Charles of JesusTo be rich and live in comfort among my possessions when you were poor, deprived, living in misery and burdened by heavy labour – I could not do it, O God, I could not love like that.
Blessed Charles de Foucauld (1858–1916)

Sounds so much like Pope Francis . . .

Yes! =) (I prepared this blog post well before Pope Francis arrived in February, though. I was not actually thinking of our Holy Father when I typed this.)

I think Bl. Charles (primarily) has in mind Jesus at Nazareth at this point in his life… but thinking of Jesus present in our neighbours ought to have much the same effect!

Reblogged this on multicolouredsmartypants and commented:
I had no idea how rich, in worldly terms, I was until I began studying poverty and development. I learned that if one has an income of £23,000 sterling (US $36,500) one is among the richest 1% of the world’s population. I also learned that extreme poverty is defined as less than $1.25 a day. This shocked me. I realised how thoroughly spoiled people are in my country – and that I was chief among these!
