    Howdy,

I just finished reading Learning from Indigenous Spiritualities: Reconciling with Creation, and I wanted to say how refreshing it is to encounter high-quality writing that integrates Indigenous authors and ways of thinking into a comparative Western framework, allowing these perspectives to be more clearly understood.

As an education student who reads a great deal of Indigenous scholarship, I’ve noticed that much of the academic literature I encounter seems heavily influenced by postmodernism and deconstruction. I’ve grown increasingly cautious, as some authors appear to be smuggling European philosophical assumptions under the guise of Indigenous thought. It often feels as though, in Canada, neo-Marxism has effectively parasitized Indigenous studies.

That is why your work stands out, it feels grounded, sincere, and committed to genuine dialogue. I particularly appreciated how you drew parallels between Christianity and Indigenous beliefs. Coming from an LDS background, regardless of one’s view on whether we are Christian by definition, I share the belief, common to many Indigenous traditions, that the earth is alive and will one day testify before the Creator about what has taken place.

I believe there is one God, one Creator, and that we are all His children. I am now trying to deepen my understanding of Mino-Bimaadiziwin, and I sense there is profound wisdom in these teachings about how to live in harmony and right relationship with all of creation.

I appreciated what I have read and will read more.

    Thank you

    Cody

Hi Cody—thank you for this astonishingly good message!

I can’t guarantee that there are other offerings around here that fit your background and interests (mostly because I wouldn’t want to speak for you), but I do hope so. I appreciate your comments on approaching this from an LDS background; it’s definitely one of my favourite bits of encouragement I’ve received.

That the earth will testify to the Creator is such a powerful way of saying it, and I have been reflecting on that these past couple days. It probably merits more reflection still.

      Thank you, too!
