Picturing Mary, Absorbed in Contemplation of the Word Within

The Visitation sketched by Charles de Foucauld
The Visitation sketched by Charles de Foucauld

When I picture you, Mary, going, as in the Gospel, to a hill country of Judah, to perform an act of charity for your cousin Elizabeth—I see you as beautiful, serene, majestic, absorbed in contemplation of the Word of God within you.

An inspiring pairing of St. Elizabeth of the Trinity’s saying and De Foucauld drawing! Thanks!
May I suggest that contemplative readers who enjoyed that image may be deeply rewarded by reading the chapter on “Theotokos” in Bernadette Roberts’ new book, “The Real Christ” (2017), and the chapter on “Logos.”

FYI “The Real Christ” has aptly been described by Yale theologian Dr. Peter Traben Haas: “The most important work on Christian mystical theology [ever] written.” Haas continues his commentary on Bernadette’s work: “The Real Christ” is simply the E=MC of theology, unfolding the deepest mysteries of the Trinity with profound clarity.” The “Marian” insights of this work are unforgettable.

    Thank you.
