The Catechism of the Catholic Church, quoting Saint John Damascene, says that prayer in general is a raising of the heart and mind to God. If prayer in general is a raising of the heart and mind to God, then what is contemplative prayer?
Saint Teresa Margaret of the Sacred Heart gives us a very good answer:
I will fix my gaze on my heart, and I will raise my heart to God.
There really isn’t much more to say in this context…
