After We Start, God Takes Over the Battle

Everything seems to be a heavy burden, and rightly so, because it involves a war against ourselves. But once we begin to work, God does so much in the soul and grants it so many favours that all that one can do in this life seems little.

This is what amazes me. This is grace in its truest form, I think, this overflowing of love that doesn’t (can’t) come from ourselves.

Mencius/Mengzi (an ancient Chinese philosopher) has a nice phrase that I like on this subject (maybe one day I’ll post about it):

“It is a marvellous thing that humans cannot accomplish; but yet, it is done. The author of this reality must then be Heaven,” or, better for Christian theology, God.

These things that can’t come from ourselves might be full of surprises, perhaps more pain, and darkness, but they constitute a safer path, too. =)
