If there is a view of spirituality which is false, it is the one which presents it as a kind of interior life lived in the abstract, in pursuit of an intellectual ideal, without reference to things as they really are. That is why the expression ‘interior life’ is not without danger, if it encourages us to confine our religion and our relations with God to within ourselves – without reflecting sufficiently that this interior life, if it is truly lived with God, must completely change our way of living and our attitude regarding our duties to our neighbours and our ministry… The whole man is redeemed, and through charity, the whole man is involved in relationships with the rest of humanity, which should be directed towards the building up of solidarity one with another.
