“He Has Only to Look at People…”

At the Shrine of Mary (Annai Velangkanni) in Medan, Indonesia

Light shone through Jesus, whiter than white (Mk 9:3), on Mount Tabor.

God wants to be transparent in us, too. Of, for example, Saint Clement Hofbauer, witnesses said, “He has only to look at people to make them become believers.” It was faith that people could see: his recollection, his communion with God in the “cell of his heart”, his appearance and comportment. His faith, as one witness said, “took on flesh in him and expressed itself in every feature of his face, and in all his gestures”; he had an “always friendly face that heartily radiated good will.”

We cannot predict and judge such high, inscrutable effects as the transfiguration of our physical selves, gestures, physique, expressions… The relationship is high and beyond human prediction! But the transfiguration can be – and so Jesus, his Father, and his Spirit want it to be – real.
