It is only later, when I have experienced misfortunes, when my soul has experienced the crucible of suffering, that this rose of love [Thérèse] will show itself to me… and teach me that sacrifice is the obvious proof of true love. This means that if one loves God with all one’s heart, one must conform joyfully to his will. But this will of God is very mysterious. It does not bring only happiness, but neither is it always the bearer of sadness. It was at the cost of great suffering that Thérèse became a great saint.
