Joy May Not Be Renounced

René Voillaume LBJ

The purest human joy will reach us through friendship, and without joy we cannot live. Just as supernatural friendship cannot be contemplated without the reality of a normal human friendship, so also, I am convinced, we must begin again to learn to value simple joys. There are pleasures and there is joy. Pleasures may be renounced; moral health bestowed by joy may not. Giving up some human satisfactions must not also mean giving up joy.
René Voillaume LBJ (1905–2003)
