If This Blog is about Contemplation, Why do I Write so Often about the Eucharist?

At Assumption Cathedral in Bangkok, Thailand

Good question. This isn’t a blog about liturgy. Isn’t, never will be; I wouldn’t know what to say!

So why do I talk about the Eucharist so often?

In itself, liturgy pertains to religion (which the Fathers and Saint Thomas clearly indicate is not a theological virtue, it’s a moral virtue). For human beings, religious devotion is not necessarily illuminated by love. But the thing is, the Gospel demands that we interiorize our religion. It demands that all our worship and our devotions and our cults be informed by charity. There’s no other way to live the life of the Church.

But on top of this, we’re talking about the Eucharist. We’re not just talking about any liturgy.

In the Eucharist, God is present. God comes among us. The bloody Sacrifice of Calvary is made present to us, too, in the peaceful consecration at the Mass. There is our Love: his Body, his own Blessed Humanity, made present again. The heart of the Eucharist is not religion; it’s love, love, Love!
