If a Christian theology cannot inscribe in its vision of redemption, of the mystery of the Cross, that Auschwitz too is part of the suffering of Christ, then we’re in complete absurdity. The persecution of the elect of God is not a crime similar to all the other crimes that men are capable of: we’re talking about crimes directly linked to Election and, thus, the Jewish condition.
Jean-Marie Cardinal Lustiger (1926–2007)
