When some idea, some notion, some way of seeing and living has seized you, you want to see it everywhere. To me, the Gifts of the Holy Spirit are like that.

I was reading a retreat preached by Charles Journet, and I came across these words:

… inhabitation. The Trinity comes to live in the hearts of those who remain open to grace, not only as the efficient cause, but also like the host that places in them the responses of love…

The Trinity places in us the responses of love! We are merely guided. It is all we can do when it comes to the very best things. And how are we guided? How are we docile to these promptings towards the responses of love? By the Gifts of the Holy Spirit: the contemplative gifts of Wisdom, Understanding, Knowledge; the active gifts of Counsel, Piety, Fortitude, Fear of the Lord.

The Holy Spirit, the whole Trinity, comes to dwell in us, guide us, make us docile, place in us the responses of love.
