While we fancy ourselves to be loving God, we make efforts that we are aware of, and it pleases us to notice that we are capable of giving something to God.

But to know that we are loved even when we have sinned, or when we are lukewarm, or when we suffer, or when we’re in the darkness, or when we are scandalized by the conduct of God in his providence: this is the most difficult thing that there is.
