Elevator

Carrying back clothes – clean – from the laundry,
Pushing the button – it’s stiff – hold the door, see
Two other people to take the lift up.

My brother and sister enter the lift now.
We know each other but cannot discern how.
Two other people taking the lift up.

Eye contact – no, that’s not for the lift or
Tight, compact spaces, the like, once the door
Closes; together we go up.

Stress on their faces when they came in;
Eyes downcast now, would like to see in,
But not while we’re in here – and – up.

Christ’s hand on my shoulder,
Christ’s hand on her shoulder,
Christ’s hand on his shoulder –
With my neighbours
My spirit goes up.
